Soft cover chapbook, 12mo, (3 x 7 1/2 inches), in gray decorated card wraps over card printed in red and green,the titles printed in red to the front of wrap within a British arts and crafts style frame surrounded by a diaper design of three-leaved sprigs within a diamond shaped lattice of thorned rose stems. The publisher's Foulis monogram is worked into the woodblock style design, as is a maker's mark, with the initials TF (Thomas Foulis). The title is printed vertically in red to the spine edge. Rear of wrap features an additional diamond shaped vignette motif with the words "The Leaves of Life Series" worked into the outer edge of the design. Printed at Riverside Press, Edinburgh.104 pp. plus one page publisher's advertising for this series, beginning with a quotation from Omar Khayyam. Inside is printed in two colors, with title page green woodcut grape leaves vignette to title page alongside the text in black. The First Edition, as described by bibliographers Elfick and Harris [1906,] but undated. CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Title lightly rubbed at spine with a few small marks to wraps, but otherwise quite clean, as seen. Not written in. A minor bit of foxing to rear matter. **This pocket sized edition contains some of the maxims and philosophical musings of London-born WILLIAM PENN (1644-1718), Quaker theologian who famously oversaw the founding of the American State of Pennsylvania as a religious haven "for Quakers and other religious minorities of Europe." (Britannica). His reflections include those upon education, the conduct of life, avoiding luxury, consciousness and the bounds of charity, among many others. This booklet was abridged from his longer volume of the same title, first published in 1693. A handsomely designed and printed booklet and relatively scarce. Elfick and Harris, (1998), No. 290.
