Newburyport author SARAH ELIZABETH MULLIKEN 1874-1955) wrote several historical fiction novels for children. She was the daughter of an Irish-born sea captain, Capt. Moses J. Mulliken, who in a career at sea made more than sixty voyages to all parts of the world from Newburyport. The family lived in a house on High Street, which appears on the City's Heritage Walking Trail. Moses collected stories, as well as other items, which were part of the original collections forming the Custom House Maritime Museum. He was also involved in the administration of the Marine Society of Newburyport, a mutual aid society for the families of deceased seafarers. This book has a set of four short adventure stories with wonderful black and white illustrations by Harold Sichel. Elementary or middle school reading level. The stories address the particular dangers and challenges of children immigrating to America in the colonial times, either with or without their parents. The stories are set in Virginia (" Two Boys from the Roanoke"); on a risky voyage from England to Boston via Holland ("Priscilla Molineux, the Little Wanderer"); a French family struggling to resettle on the Saint Lawrence ("Jeanne Marie of the Palisade"); and finally, orphaned Puritan children traveling from Germany to Georgia. ("The Children of Frederica").
