Original Antique Engraved Etching, 4to, dated 1766 within the plate, a single folio leaf measuring 11 x 17 inches, with the plate mark at 35.8 x 25.5 cm. This domestic scene features a young woman in the window of her home, picking, or perhaps about to reach down and smell, a carnation from the pot growing on the balcony while glancing out in the opposite direction at perhaps a street or canal scene. A birdcage hangs in the window. ** CONDITION: Very Good with minor areas of foxing as seen, primarily at margins, although lightly affecting bottom line of text. Would look wonderful matted and framed. Final picture for reference only and not included. **Text:" (top) Planche No. 36 de l'Oeuvre." (bottom) Gerard Dou, pinx. After Gerard Dou, Dutch 18th century artist and disciple of Rembrandt. From the "Oeuvre de Mr. de Marcenay de Ghuy, Ecuyer, Peintre, et Graveur," published around 1780, in which it was Pl.36. The Dutch painter Gerard Dou (1613-1675) was from Leiden, initially trained as a glazier, although later studying painting under Rembrandt. This image is one of a type styled to be within an architectural niche, which was one of his specialties and allowed the artist to explore the textural qualities of the architecture. The coat of arms is of, M. de Marcenay gentleman, of St. Prix, apparently a kinsman of the engraver, to whom he writes an appreciation. British Museum ref. No. 1840,0314,103. LeBlanc No. 46. (AMJ)
