Hard cover, 12mo., 432 [2] pp. Small format hardcover, with illustration depicting scene from "The Lottery". CONDITION: Fine (as new). ** Author Shirley Hardie Jackson (1916-1965) is rightly praised for her gothic horror novel, "The Haunting of Hill House" (1959), which has been adapted for film twice as "The Haunting" (1963 and 1999). This collection of short stories gives us glimpses into Jackson's insight into the lives of ordinary people trying to make a living both in rural America and in the poorer rented apartments of New York City. The title story, "The Lottery", has many counterparts in both horror and science-fiction literature, and is indeed a fine addition to that canon. But it is the other stories which shine; Jackson depicts the shadowy side of American life in the twentieth century with candor and perception, dealing with thwarted ambition, jilter lovers, and racial prejudice. A haunting read, indeed.
