Drummond Gauld, was a soldier in the King's Own Borderers Battalion 8 in World War I, (Imperial War Museum), and wrote additional works about the war, including "The Truth from the Trenches." The first chapter of this book discusses the Author's personal experience of precognition, with stories about his military service in Verdun: "The charge of being a spiritualist has not yet been launched against me, but I anticipate it and refute it now. I do not even claim to to the possession of second-sight, being merely a dweller in the plains." (p. 10) Beyond follows a collection of Scottish ghost stories was collected during travels around the Scotland, with settings such as Castle Douglas and Spedlin in Dumfries and Galloway, several Edinburgh and Midlothian locations, and the Aberdeenshire area. Chapters include: "Strange Incidents of the Great War", "A Romance of Inchdrewer Castle", "The Lost Heir of Castle Finlater", "The Miller of Spedlin Tower", "The Secret Room of Bruntsfield House", "Traditions of Roslin Castle", "The Ghost of Lennox Tower", and "A Legend of Coull". Spooky stuff; stories that could be told around an open fire in a castle great room, with a Scottish gale howling outside. (AJ)
