Whilst Jacobs is most famous for his horror story, "The Money's Paw", he frequently wrote humorous stories about nautical life. Many of the stories in "Sea Urchins" were first published in Jerome K. Jerome's magazine, "The Idler". With lots of faux-pirate dialogue ("Ay, ay, my hearty" etc), these stories start with the adventures of a boy, Ralph, who, like Don Quixote, has read too many "penny dreadful" stories about piracy and the high seas, and so is sent by his father to experience sea-life first hand. He adapts to the life of fetching and carrying for the ship's crew, but just as he as finished his first trip, he appears to have disappeared, leaving a note behind which will terrify the crew... only to have him laughing at their expense. This was also published as a theatrical play in New York 1898. REF: Watson 4, 621.
