His work preceded that of Freud, and was in opposition to some of the latter's ideas, although considered an important influence. His first important title, L'automatisme Psychologique," was published in 1889. **This work features chapters on " Miracles and Animal Magnetism," "Cures Derived from Magnetism," "Therapies of Religious Origin," "Mental Agencies," "The Utilization of Automatism," "Forms of Mental Economy," "Psychic Income," "Applications," and "Psychotherapy." The first couple of chapters are interesting in that he discusses the American, Mary Baker Eddy, (1821-1910) whom he describes as a "neurotic paraplegic" from Bow, New Hampshire, who's physical and mental rehabilitation under the care of Dr. P.P. Quimby, inspired the former's career as a healer and founder of the Christian Scientist movement which was based around Boston. (Janet visited Boston in 1865.) Janet critiques the American experience of Spiritualism, including such things as seances and hypnotism, as being largely debunked by the French Academy of Science, and emerging as largely being in the province of "charlatanism." Interesting topics. With index.
