The derelict fish-canning district of Monterey, California is again the scene of the action, after World War II, with the homeless characters "Mack and the boys" portrayed as the skid row sidekicks of marine biologist and octopi aficionado, Doc. Doc struggles to make relevant research for Western Biological Labs. Meanwhile, a love interest, in the person of Suzy, a young woman down on her luck whom he encounters at The Bear Flag, develops, giving him the required inspiration to make a go of things. Humor, and an appreciation for the variety of particularly American characters found in these pages make this a worthy read. (Some adult content.) This book was the basis for the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Pipe Dream," which opened on Broadway in November, 1955. It also was adapted into the 1982 movie "Cannery Row," starring Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. Goldsmith & Payne A33b, first cloth edition, p. 79. Bradford Morrow Catalogue Eight, "John Steinbeck, Harry Valentine Collection," (Santa Barbara, Cunningham Press, 1980), same as No. 227.p. 57.
