Presumed First Macmillan edition (First Thus). Hard cover, 12 mo, in green cloth, blocked with floral circular vignette and publisher's logo in opposite corners of front board with stylized titles also in black to center front. Titles in gold to spine, with publisher name in black, at foot. Chocolate glazed end papers. Half title page is present. There is no copyright statement but the date 1878 appears on the title page. 230pp. plus [1] p. publisher's advertising of "Works on the Garden." With index. A notice of this book appears in the Pacific Rural Press issue of 21 Sept., 1878. p. 179 calling it "a good translation." (Unfortunately cannot access full text at this time, via CDNC.) Illustrated with numerous engraved reproductions displaying the tools and many techniques of tree and shrub grafting for propagation and decorative purposes, including species- specific instructions. Also discusses combat against pests and disease. With index. CONDITION: Good. External wear along front joint, with small chip and fraying to head and foot of spine. Inside, cracked front hinge, ghost of sticker residue on end paper and general light age toning. An undated former owner signature in old ink to ffep. Former owner stamp to top of half title. Pencilled note to rear endpaper. Odd bits of foxing throughout. Now in a protective mylar cover. **AUTHOR Charles Baltet (1830-1908), a ninth generation arborist, botanist and horticulturalist from Troyes in the Champagne region of France, was also an expert in pomology (fruiting trees) His written works include books on commercial fruit growing, the care of grapes, apples and pears. (BnF). He was awarded the medal of the Legion of Honor, and was President of Société Horticole, Vigneronne et Forestière de l'Aube in Troyes. PROVENANCE: Stephen W. Sabine, with his ownership stamp. Mr. Sabine and his wife donated forest lands near Groton, Massachusetts to the New England Forestry Foundation in the 1970's, conservation land which is now for public use.
