There is ample description of contemporary New York, in fine descriptive prose spanning both travel and historical interest. His descriptions span most of the New England States. ** Philadelphia-born Author Joel Cook (1842-1910) first serialized these travel observations in columns found in the "Philadelphia Public Ledger" and other periodicals. This is the first edition in book form, and followed upon the successful publication the prior year of a companion volume, " A Holiday Tour in Europe." He trained as a lawyer, later becoming a journalist and correspondent for "The London Times." He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1907, and served other Philadelphia civic bodies.
