Hard cover, 8vo, in blue cloth, titles in silver, ix, 138 pp. CONDITION: Very Good Plus, light shelfwear and minor rubbing. Gift inscription to ffep in ballpoint by contributor Charlotte C. Bayley, author of the first paper: "The Capture of the Brigantine Polly and Crew." This anthology of nineteen historical papers delivered before the members of the Historical Society of Old Newbury was produced as a centennial tribute to its mission of preserving the local history of the early settlers of Newbury, and later Newburyport (incorporated seprately in 1851), Massachusetts through the records and other artifacts preserved, collected and studied by its membership. Fascinating accounts, such as in the Bayley article, detail how this maritime and ship-building center was once caught up in the currents of history and international diplomacy, with mariners preyed upon, imprisoned and ransomed by Algerian pirates off Cadiz in 1793. Other accounts detail the presence of a "Pest House" on Plum Island, used to quarantine shipboard illnesses brought back from foreign ports, such as smallpox or plague. The hero's parade for the commander of the French allies, the Marquis de Lafayette, is also discussed. A very readable, thought-provoking book of local history.
