Author Thomas Hughes, QC, lawyer and later judge (1822-1896) was also a social reformer interested trades unionism and cooperatives, founding, in later life, a Christian socialist utopian community at Rugby, Tennessee for the aid of the English nobilities' second sons. This book represents some early work of the British graphic Artist Edmund (E.J.) Sullivan (1869-1933). He would go on to illustrate numerous London magazines and books. His style has been compared to Beardsley, and his work did appear in the latter's "Yellow Book" series. Numerous editions of this work were published, with Macmillan publishing six alone between 1857 and 1858. This is in a scarce Cranford-style illustrated gilft binding. Watson 933.
