Brontë, Charlotte; Brontë, Emily; Brontë Anne Villette, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Penguin Classics Box Set) Published by Penguin Classics, London, 2014. Penguin Clothbound Classics
Boxed set of four volumes, 8vo in decorated cloth, with critical introductions, ribbon markers and biographies. CONDITION: Near Fine. Very fresh and clean, but with a couple of lightly bumped corners. ** This attractive box set of four classic gothic novels by the Brontë sisters features the some of the best of British nineteenth century fiction. Charlotte Brontë is represented here by two novels. In "Villete" (619pp), a young woman encounters ghosts (real or imagined), stories about past loves, and finally a romance cut short by a 3-year absence and a final storm... the ending is ambiguous. "Jane Eyre" (578pp) is the classic "madwoman in the attic" novel, set in an English manor house, with a dramatic climax; it sets the standard for the English gothic novel. Anne Brontë's "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" (542pp) is much more of a psychological novel, and tells of a woman's abusive marriage to an alcoholic, and her steadfast adherence to her own values. Finally, Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" (353pp) far surpasses standard Victorian gothic, and creates a world in which morality is superseded by untamed passion.
