Hard cover, 16mo ( 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches), in salmon colored cloth with burgundy design and titles to front and upon spine. Third printing. Red end papers, 117 pp. plus series catalogue. CONDITION: Fine, like new. The story is entirely constructed from letters between the different characters in this lesser known work by the author of "Pride and Prejudice" and other classic Victorian novels. The Lady Susan of the title is a pretty young widow who sets her extended family into paroxysms of discomfort with cunning new matrimonial gambits, in a plot informed by the inequality of socially acceptable aspirations of women. The plot is a fun puzzle to put together in the reading. English novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) began this work in 1794, when she was nineteen, although it was not published during her lifetime, coming out in an 1871 edition. (original, Watson 693.)
