This survey with many elevations and illustrations, is a good architectural introduction to some of Edinburgh's most historic buildings, and discusses the history of the Georgian structures built between 1714 and 1830, meant, according to the Author, as a guide for city planners and the like, to foster awareness of the extent of historic buildings worthy of preservation.** Scottish AUTHOR Ian Gordon Lindsay, A.R.S.A, F.R.I.A.S. ( 1906-1966) did important restoration work on a number of high profile churches, castles and historic villages during his professional career, with an office on Great Stuart Street, Edinburgh. Among his works were restorations at Inverary Castle, the Canongate Church on the Royal Mile, and the historic villages at Cramond and Culross. He also oversaw the rebuilding of facilities at the Abbey of Iona, the site of Saint Columba's residence in the Scottish isles from the 7th century. ( bio: Royal Scottish Academy).
