According to the Translator's Notes, this is the first author-authorized issue published outside Japan since the first Japanese edition of 1987. A somewhat aimless young man, Toru, arrives at university in Tokyo amid the culturally- changing 1960's. Toru is bound by loyalty to a childhood friend who died, and feels compelled to help a young woman, Naoko, who has never worked through her grief at the death of this mutual friend. Their story is a journey of quiet intensity which takes them on literal journeys from the city to a mountainous retreat in search of mental clarity and love. The book is also full of humor, has been translated into 50 languages, and adapted to a prize-winning 2010 movie. A beautifully designed version of a powerful novel.
