Fleming, James A Little Collection of Wit and Wisdom Published by Privately Printed at The Chiswick Press, London, 1927. First Edition
Hard cover, 8vo in dark green pebbled cloth, top edge gilt, letter-press printed on laid paper, with frontispiece photographic portrait of the Author, 89 pp., First edition. These are witicisms of retired London restaurateur, James Fleming, who established a number of Fleming's Restaurants, with premises at 68, Oxford Street in Central London, beginning in 1903. Apparently the restaurants were "dry" establishments where no alcohol was served. Originally from Dunbartonshire in western Scotland, James and his son Peter Fleming were also book collectors. Peter became a rare book dealer and member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries, writing a number of histories. The family purchased an English country house, Aldwick Grange at Bognor Regis, around 1920, which they furnished with a collection of William Morris tapestries.
