His schooling at Harrow and Oxford put him in touch with other notable future clerics of the day, although there is also much mention of sport; cricket, and rowing in particular, during the halcyon days of youth. DNB tells of a visit to Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford in the company of his uncle William Wordsworth and his sister Dora in 1831. Before entering the ministry, he travelled in Europe, and became Master at Winchester College, as well as publishing a successful work on Greek Grammar. OCLC 6623785.
