A biographical note about the Author and Artist Jules Adeline, taken from the "Dictionnaire de Biographie Française" (Paris: 1933,) is also bound in.**JULES ADELINE,( born April 28, 1845 in Rouen; died August 24, 1909,) was a very prominent French designer, engraver, preservationist and art historian. He was author of the popular architecture dictionary, "Lexique des Termes d'Art, (Paris, A. Quantain, 1884). Translated into Spanish and English, it was hailed as the "most important lexicographic work of art history published in the 19th century."(worldcat). The front matter to our volume lists this, as well as 18 additional art historical tiles by him, including "le Chat d'apres les Japonais" (Rouen: Imprimerie Cagniard,1893), which alludes to the author's facination with, and large collection of, Japanese woodblock prints, introducing the "japanisme" style into the avante guarde arts of the period. Adeline's also created approximately 9000 drawings, engravings and watercolors, mainly of the old town of Rouen. (Bibliothèque Municipale Dijon) He had a large book collection, many of which he decorated with his own sketches and paintings (DBF, as above). [Please see our related item for sale, "The Bouddha," our no. 9304 for an example of this work.] PROVENANCE: Ex libris Gavin D.R.
