Eighth edition. (First published 1873.) Hard cover, 12mo, bound in black leather-covered (flexible) boards with double rules of red horizontally across the boards and spine, between which is a crowned crest blocked in gold to the front, with titles to the spine. Bottom of text block edge only is stained red, with glazed black end papers, and illustrated with an engraved frontispiece image of Toledo, as well as an additional 16 black and white (unpaginated) full page views taken from engravings. In English. xxi, [1]-274 pp., plus 4 page undated publisher's catalogue of the "Works by Augustus J.C. Hare," listing 28 of his works, mostly on travel but also a biography and memoir; also featured are two books of a religious nature by the AUTHOR's late uncle, Augustus William Hare, (his wife was Augustus J.C. Hare's lifelong guardian.) CONDITION: Very Good. Some bubbling to the front cover. Otherwise, clean, sound and gently age-toned. A former owner's name to a prelim. in old ink. **Except for the Introduction, in which the Author gives general advice about travel expectations, a proposed rail itinerary, as well as a recommended reading list with which to become familiar with Spanish literature and culture, the work is predominantly a travelogue of a journey made in 1871 and 1872. History, art and architecture are a big focus, as reflection of the complex political history of the country with its Portuguese, Moorish, Austrian and French incursions. This keeps what was probably already a somewhat dated Victorian guide alive even into the early years of the twentieth century, and indeed worth reading today. **AUTHOR Augustus J.C. Hare (1834-1903) wrote a number of popular travel books, many of Italian origin, during a varied career as an Author and successful artist. He came from a family of writers and artists. He was born in Rome, although educated in England, first near the ancestral family seat in Herstmonceux, East Sussex and later at Oxford. He also wrote a six-volume autobiography, by all accounts an entertaining read. **FROM A REVIEW in the Spectator of this edition: "Here is the ideal book of travel to Spain; the book exactly anticipates the requirements of everybody who is fortunate enough to be going to that enchanted land; the book which ably consoles those who are not so happy by supplying the imagination from the daintiest and most delicious of its stories."
