First Edition, stated First impression, July 1907. In English. Hard cover 12mo, in green cloth, the titles blocked in gilt, with a vignette shield in red, light blue and gold with a lion rampant and cross, the author and illustrator's names at the foot of the front board. Sunning to the front and spines of the two volumes has oxidized the color to a degree, as seen in photos. A few inconsequential smudges to boards. **The thirteenth installment of the "The Travel Lovers Library," Boston publisher L.C. Page & Company's illustrated travel series, modeled on the success of other contemporary travel publishers, such as Britain's A. & C. Black, who were benefitting from the new era of relatively affordable tourism brought about by the advent of expanded rail links and steam- powered sailing vessels around the turn of the twentieth century. Vol. I describes the cities of Assisi and Orvieto, including a biography of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, elevations and black and white photo reproductions of the interior of Chiesa Nuova, the Church of S. Francesco, Assisi and other monuments and museums. Also a chapter on places of interest in Orvieto, once "one of the richest and most powerful cities of the Etruscan confederation." (p. 203.) Vol. II details some of the attractions of Perugia, and some of the smaller Umbrian Towns, and has useful Appendices on Umbrian Art to be found outside of Italy, as well as additional reading suggestions on the arts and artists. The Authors Cruikshank took over the writing of this series after the death of the original instigator, Ontario-born, Oxford educated man of letters, Grant Allen (1848-1899), who in addition to penning works on travel, was also prolifically churning out works on evolution, naturalism, socialism, and science fiction.
