Sunning and oxidation to the spine has faded it to brown, also seen partially at top of boards, both front and rear. Lightly worn corners (two bumped,) polish offset to endpapers from the turn-ins. Very light foxing to new prelims. Hinges and joints in order. Pages are otherwise clean, bright and the binding firm. **American Fireside Poet James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was descended from first settlers of this bookseller's hometown, Newbury (Newburyport,) Massachusetts, his parents being of Scots decent. Lowell, a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, has been recognized as an important abolitionist voice in the mid-nineteenth century, both as a journalist, and poet. Born in Cambridge, Mass., Lowell was educated at Harvard College, graduating with a notably ropey academic record, however voted Class Poet. He would later become Professor of Languages at that same institution. Later life led him to editorship of The Atlantic Monthly and ambassadorship to both Spain and Great Britain. **Provenance: Ex-libris Alexander Stone, (1907-1998) Scottish lawyer, bibliophile, and benefactor to Glasgow University (with his bookplate.) Ex- Libris Christopher Foyle, of Beeleigh Abbey, late book collector and former CEO of Foyles Bookstore in Great Britain. Founded at the Charing Cross Road location in London in 1903, Foyles grew into a large chain in the twentieth century, selling to Waterstones in 2018.
