Hard Cover, 24mo, (4 x 5 1/2 inches) in decorated red cloth blocked in gold with a design of falling roses, the titles in an oval to the top board and along the spine, 47pp. undated but circa 1909. Contains four black and white illustrations by the Scottish artist, Jessie M. King (1875-1949.) The cover illustration is not by her. The tissue-guarded frontispiece illustration by King plus three additional black and white full page illustrations within the text, are each signed with her monogramed initials and titled with hand-lettering. Undated, but bibliographer cites a 1903 contract for these illustrations by King, and surmises this particular variation was from circa 1909. (see below) **CONDITION: Very Good, with some small marks to top of boards., more noticeable to rear board. A few signatures are slightly loose, but holding firm. Christmas inscription in old ink dated 1909 to ffep., plus a second fountain ink signature elsewhere in prelims. Illustrations are clean and bright, text and endpapers lightly toned.**These represent the artist's most collectible style of illustration. The titles of King's drawings are: "Where I Made One--Turn Down An Empty Glass," (frontis); "And One By One Crept Silently To Rest"; "Came Stealing Through the Dusk an Angel-Shape," and "The Angel With His Darker Draught." Executed in the artist's earliest style of finely detailed pen and ink on vellum drawings, paying some homage to the work of Aubrey Beardsley, but are also representing a uniquely Scottish interpretation of the Art Nouveau style of illustration. Along with fellow students at the Glasgow School of Art, under the instruction of Fra Newberry in the 1890's. King would later go on to illustrate children's books, sell her framed drawings, design silver, jewelry and textiles, and work as an important commercial book designer and illustrator.
