Creed, Capt. Percy R. (edit.) Milestones. The Boston Society for Natural History. 1830-1930 Published by For the Society, Merrymount Press, Boston, 1930. First Edition
Hard cover, 4to, in half olive linen over brown laid paper-covered boards with titles blocked to front board and spine in gold, 117 pp. Condition Near Fine. One small mark to lower front board. Former owner's signature in ballpoint to ffep. Features numerous photograveure reproductions of a number of Boston grandees, many of whom were also benefactors in other Bay State institutions, among them being notable men of science, commerce, historians, and artists. The museum took up the mantel of Linnean Society of New England, another early nineteenth-century Boston-based natural history institution, whose collections of "animals, plants and minerals" were transferred after their dissolution in 1822. (The collapse of the former being due to an imbroglio over the society's discredited report confirming the existence of the Gloucester sea serpent.) In the early 1950's the Society for Natural History's collection became the basis of the Boston Museum of Science. Printed at Daniel B. Updike's Merrymount Press of Boston.
