Dr. Happold, was Senior Lecturer in Zoology at the Australian National University, Canberra Australia, and formerly Reader in Zoology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The work details the Author's encounters with a great variety of mammals found in the varied ecological areas of Nigeria, including mangrove swamps, rainforest, woodlands, grasslands and the Sahara desert, which he explored extensively in the 1960's and 1970's.
