Hard cover, 8vo, (measuring 6 1/2 x 9 inches) bound in three-quarter calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the spine with five false raised bands, gilt stamped decoration and the titles in gold to red leather labels, all edges marbled, marbled paper paste downs, 326pp. including tissue-guarded frontispiece. (not the edition with the publisher's catalogue.) Red, white and green headband. First edition. Condition Very Good, or a bit better. Rubbing to the head and foot of the spine, two bumped corners, some grazes to the rear leather corners and near front joint. Hinges in order. Moderately age toned, no foxing. Clean and tight.** New Hampshire-born Author Thomas Wallace Knox (1835-1896) had a varied career as a teacher, reporter and gold prospector after the Civil War. He also invented a system of "topographical telegraphy" later sold to the U.S. Government. But he is remembered today for his contributions to the travel and juvenile fiction genres. A man who walked the walk, there are accounts of his adventures sledging, wagoning, sailing and elephant-riding his way around the world--twice. (Appleton's) Other tales are scientific in nature, emphasizing Latin names of various plants and animals. ** The second in a series of natural history hunting and fishing adventures for young boys, called "Hunting Adventures on Land and Sea," and copiously illustrated" according to the author, from the pages of Harper's Magazine.
