Cross, John Keir The Other Passenger [SIGNED] Published by John Westhouse, London, 1944. Signed by author Illustrated by Bruce Angrave First Edition
Hard cover, Octavo (5 ½" x 8 ⅜"). 274pp. In publisher's black cloth binding with gold lettering to spine. Rare signature by author to front free endpaper. Illustrated by British artist Bruce Angrave, with 8 full-color plates. Condition: Near Fine with a touch of shelf-wear to corners, moderate age toning, in a Fair dust jacket, which has chips and loss to edges. *** The classic collection of gothic tales by the Scottish BBC radio scriptwriter, producer and broadcaster John Keir Cross (1914-1967). These are truly "Tales of the Unexpected", with nasty stings worthy of Ambrose Bierce or Clark Ashton Smith. The illustrations are wonderfully apt surrealist works, and add to the unsettling atmosphere of the stories. *** The artist, Bruce Angrave (1912-1983), created many posters for the wartime British Ministry of Information, as well as for British Railways. His wartime poster, "These are the fruits of horseplay, Don't Distract Your Mates", shows the same surreal and unsettling imagery as do the plates in this book. *** Bleiler: "The Checklist of Science-Fiction & Supernatural Fiction", page 53; Ashley: "Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction", page 60.
