He worked as a journalist and published twenty three books. His better-known father, Samuel G. Drake, also was a notable author of Americana. This book contains early examples of the heliotype--" a printing process in which an impression is taken in ink from a gelatine surface that has been exposed under a negative and prepared for printing." There are 20 unnumbered, tissue-guarded leaves of such plates, plus the map, in this volume, as well as traditional engravings.
