George Peabody (1795-1869), of South Danvers, Mass. became a major philanthropist in New England and elsewhere, after a successful career in merchant banking. While pursuing his fortune in London, he offered his hometown money earmarked for the creation of a lyceum, or public library. This book lists all the officers and trustees of the Institute, holdings and accounts. Peabody would go on to establish a number of other charitable educational foundations in Baltimore, London and elsewhere. OCLC 35868487. A scarce Limited Edition. Rare.
