Sixth Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Hard cover,12mo (measuring 4" x 5 ¾ inches), in black quarter leather, the pink paper-covered boards printed in black, with titles to the top board and featuring the Newburyport publisher's advertising on the rear board,160pp. Condition: Good. Covers are well worn with a good deal of the printed title worn away and the boards somewhat wavy. (Now protected in mylar however.) Joints and hinges are firm. The interior pages remain mostly bright, having the occasional stain. First published in 1853, the book was designed to promote devotional singing. The publisher, B.F. Carter, is mentioned in an 1880 copy of the Newburyport Daily Herald, in which advertised his shop at 78 State Street, selling a new collection of piano fortes. (Newburyport Daily Herald, April 1, 1880, p.1.) Printed at A.B. Kidder's Music and Typography 6 School Street. Andrew Bradshaw Kidder ran a music typography business in Charlestown, Mass. during this time. The publication of this hymnal was contemporaneous with a notable religious revival in the 1850's in Massachusetts, when thousands gathered under tents on Sundays for prayers and devotion. The Committee of the New-England Christian Convention sought to provide new materials, including hymns, for the organization of Sabbath schools and other religious events. OCLC 77551260. Scarce.
