The saga follows a New York doctor's family removal to England, There are robust allusions to various reform questions, many based on religious interpretation, including a discussion of polygamous versus monogamous marriage, and broad hints of spiritualism. Genealogical information on the Author, Dr. Charles Stuart Welles (1848-1927) mentions his nomination as Vice President of the United States in 1888, and his appointment as First Secretary to the American Embassy in London. He wrote several novels, poems, as well as works on medicine and international law. Scarce in commerce. OCLC 7587175.
