The group departed from New York aboard the Steamship Devonia. This vessel was, unusually, outfitted with a music room, containing "growing plants and singing birds," in addition to a piano-forte, organ, and "a well-filled library." (p. 5) Contains a mix of local histories, and anecdotes. An Appendix lists the names and hometowns of the travelers: a group of teachers, ministers, and other "brain-workers," recruited by Mr. Tourjée. "The volume is intended as a pleasant souvenir of a delightful round of European travel, in which nearly three hundred Americans -- a larger excursion party than ever before went from our shores--had, at least in part, a common experience."
