[By the Editors of Punch, or The London Charivari ] A Shilling's Worth of Nonsense **Finely Bound, Original Soft Cover Bound-in ** Published by Bradbury and Evans, Printers, Whitefriars; Henry Miller, Bookseller and Binder, London; New York, 1111. Illustrated by "Phiz" [Hablot Knight Brown]
Finely-bound hard cover, 16mo., (measuring 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches) in three quarter blue morocco over marbled paper-covered boards (predominantly red and blue), with gilt ruling at edges of leather; the spine has title and gilt design at head and foot, no date given, 60pp. Marbled paste downs. Features eight full-page, two-color engravings (each with a light green background and framing,) as well as numerous smaller illustrations inset to text by "Phiz " Hablot Knight Browne, famously the illustrator of many of the works of Charles Dickens. This is a humorous, satirical look at the strategy of being "pig-headed ," or using mis-direction, in order to achieve one's goals, with chapter headings such as "Wives, " "Childhood" and "Travellers." A small paper label of the bookbinder and bookseller Henry Miller, Nassau Street, New York is pasted to the rear pastedown. Nassau Street was an historic center of the second-hand (or rare) book trade from the 1830's through the Civil War period in New York City. An article by Edwin D. Hoffman (Jan. 1949) " The Bookshops of New York City," describes this particular establishment: " Henry Miller's shop at 122 Nassau Street had a small window, which had an exhibit of a few best-sellers, a sign advertising the Encyclopedia Britannia and solid rows of books behind the display. The shop had a second floor, with an entrance through an outside door. Beside this door was a little glass cabinet containing a display of booklets. Mr.Miller's largest sign, above the shop, told passersby that "Fine Books Make the Best Holiday Presents." Smaller signs advertised Bibles, Christmas cards and Sunday School Supplies " at retail." " The original illustrated tan pamphlet soft cover is bound into the book. Condition: Very Good Minus. Edges show rubbing, worse wear to the bottom board. Moderate toning of the text and illustrations. Some interior pages have losses at outer bottom corners. This work is assumed to have been abstracted from Punch Magazine, and the original illustrated gray paper wraps are bound in.
