Hard cover, 24mo. (measuring 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), in a fine binding of three-quarter calf over russet colored cloth-covered boards, the spine in six raised compartments with titles in gilt and four floral motifs, top edge gilt, marbled paste downs, frontispiece portrait of Author, (x), 390 pp. Condition Very Good. Some edge wear. The book, with its handsome two-color woodcut engraved bookplate of the Baptist minister, J.E. Klingsberg, was perhaps purchased by the reverend upon his "well-deserved" cruise vacation to England and Sweden in the summer of 1904, as reported in the Sept. 22, 1904 issue of "The Watchman," (p. 23). They report: " There is no more hard-working minister, and not one more consecrated to the Master's service in Connecticut than Pastor Klingsberg." (His bookplate, coincidentally, shows a young boy being handed a stack of books from, presumably, heavenly hands.) A sweet miniature collection of essays. This is an English reprint of the very popular American title first serialized in The New England Magazine in the 1831-32. Currier /Tilton (1953) p. 599.
