The novel tells a rags- to- riches story of its eponymous character, from humble cigar-store helper, to hotel owner, in early twentieth-century New York. Author Steven Millhauser (b. 1943) is more recently known for the adaptation of his work into film, including the 2006 movie, "The Illusionist, " starring Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti, based on his short story entitled "Eisenheim the Illusionist," for which he co-wrote the screenplay.
