R. Squibb and Sons, now part of the modern pharmaceutical company, Bristol Myers Squibb. As a ship's doctor, he was disappointed with the quality of medicines available, and so pursued research into their manufacture, inventing a method of distilling ether (an anesthetic). After he left the navy, he founded his own pharmaceutical company, E. R. Squibb and Sons, with his two sons, Dr. Edward H. Squibb and Charles F. Squibb. They advocated with the authorities for the purity of pharmaceuticals, and were a major supplier of medical kits to the Union Army during the American Civil War, kitting them out with morphine, surgical anesthetics, and quinine. ** These journals were published by Squibb's daughter, Mary King Squibb (1865-1950), who was married Dr. John Cummings "J.C."
