Hayes, and for whom the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Thompson was named. Winthrop is known to have been in correspondence with Thompson (see the Lincoln Collection item 71200908302502, a letter from Winthrop inviting Thompson to visit Winthrop's home in Brookline during his visit to Boston and its Navy Yard). ** Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894) was Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847-1849, and gave seed money to a teacher's college which became Winthrop University.
