In Latin. In-8,[12], 784, [20] pp. Hard cover, 8vo, (measuring 5 x 8 ΒΌ inches) in a contemporary full calf binding, panel stamped in blind and accented with a rolled gilt double border. The spine has five raised bands, double ruled in gilt, one compartment with the title, others stamped with a single gilt flower. Edges of the text block are decoratively spattered red. The boards of the binding are decorated in a cottage roof style, with inner and outer banding joined at the corners, the use of a rolled floral ornament parallel to the inner lined border and four fleurons at the outer corners. The engraved title page features an image of Erasmus and three scholars inspecting a globe-- likely a play on the printer/publishers' identity: the family of Joan and Cornelius Blaeu with family roots and fame in the making of globes, maps and atlases. The Blaeus were the official mapmakers to the Dutch East India Trading Company. The editor, Cornelius Schrevel,(1608-1664) physician, scholar and head of faculty at Leiden University, edited many of the classics. The Collquia, a smash hit of Christian humanism, was first published in 1518 and very popular for its gentle humor and satire. CONDITION: Very Good Minus antiquarian condition. The exterior has antiquarian wear and rubbing to edges, a moderate loss of gilt, and showing areas of cracking to joints and hinges which are still holding. Ffeps delicate but holding, with some offsetting. The interior is clean and firm. It remains a very usable, well maintained, and attractive item. OCLC no. 962543429 et al. Brunet Vol.II (1861) 1041.
