Canadian-born poet William Bliss Carman (1861-1929) published fifty volumes of poetry as well as four essay collections. He admired the Pre-Raphaelite poets in Britain, such as Rossetti and Swinburne, and belonged to a group on the Boston literary scene, The Visionists, who shared this enthusiasm. The Rough Rider was dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt.
