[Bunce, Oliver Bell] Life Before Him. A Novel. Published by W. A.Townsend & Company, New York, 1860. First Edition
Hard cover in terracotta publisher's cloth, with several borders stamped in blind to the boards, and the title in gilt to the spine. 401pp + 8pp adverts. An early novel by New York author, editor and playwright, Oliver Bell Bunce (1828-1890). A humorous tale of the conjunction of two apparently penniless, bohemian souls in nineteenth century New York; the young and struggling would-be author, Warren James, and his older confidante, a self-described artistic failure, the actor named Phillip Giles. A good read. Condition: About Very Good with light foxing, minor shelfwear and fraying to corners. Bunce wrote a number of humorous titles, including "Don't," ( 1890 ) a pithy guide to etiquette in speech and action. He was also notable for his edition of Fenimore Cooper's works with plates by F.O.C. Darley.
