Hard cover, L. Post 8vo, in first impression "cherry red" publisher's cloth with pictorial cover and titles in gilt, all edges gilt, 110 pp. plus Notes. No dust jacket. The author Henry Austin Dobson (1840-1921) did not begin his poetry career until the 1860's, but made a splash with critics, numbering Trollope and George Eliot among his admirers. His use of French verse forms struck a chord. He would go on to write a number of well-regarded biographies of English artists and writers in the 1880's. This is a re-issue of material first published in 1877, with the addition of the charming black and white artwork of Bernard Partridge. CONDITION: Very Good. Slight sunning to top front board and spine. Occasional light foxing within, affects some plates. But generally very clean, bright and tight, a handsome volume.
