Clarke, John M. L'Île Percée, The Finial of the St. Lawrence; or Gaspé Flaneries, Being a Blend of Reveries and Realities, of History and Science, of Description and Narrative, as also A Signpost to the Traveler Published by Yale University Press, New Haven, 1923. First Edition
Hardcover, 8vo, in green cloth with gilt titles, with pictorial dust jacket, 203 pp. Black and white illustration throughout by Esther Kingsbury. This was the author's last book, capping a career of prolific production of books and scientific articles on his specialties of paleontology, zonal stratigraphy, anthropoids and fossils, in what has been characterized as more than 10,000 pages. Clarke's professional achievements include the founding of the State Museum of New York, and the completion of the New York State Geological Survey. He taught at a number of New England universities including Smith and Amherst Colleges. In this, his valedictory work, (he died in 1925,) he engages the reader in an imaginative, rather poetic description of the "fisher-folk of Quebec," and the natural beauty of the eastern Canadian provinces. Condition: Good Plus. There is one bumped corner on the rear board, (effecting a number of page corners within.) The edges of the textblock are dusty. The interior is age-toned as expected, there is mild foxing to the pastedowns and endpapers. The dust jacket is worn and chipped at the edges and a bit soiled. It is not price-clipped. Stamped as a Complimentary Reader's Copy to top of page 19.
